GDP337: Global Design Project Color Challenge

WOW! Take a look at the beautiful color challenge we have this week at Global Design Project.

As much as I love making cards, my secret passion is creating 3D projects and incorporating paper crafted elements into the design. The reason is simple...when you make cards they need to be somewhat flat so they can be easily mailed. But when you decorate boxes/favors/gifts, you can go a little overboard and use all the dimension you want because they will probably be hand-delivered.

I am really sad that the Pierced Blooms Dies are going away in a few weeks, so I had to find a way to use them on as many projects as possible before they are retired from the catalog. Once things retire, I usually don't use them again for my blog projects, but I think it is safe to say that I may tuck these away for my personal use.

I used the Mini Jam Jars (#155685) (also retiring) and filled them with pastel-colored jellybeans to give as fun Easter treats. I shaped the petals and leaves, then used hot glue to add some depth to each layer.

The "Easter Blessings" sentiment is from the Daffodil Daydream stamp set (#157786) and cut with the Taylor Made Tags Dies (#155563). I cut a thin scallop border for the edge of the lid using a die from the Penned Flowers die set (#155492). I also tied on some Baker's Twine from the Essentials Pack (#155475) and added a bow using some White Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon (#151325). For an extra little touch, I used the Layering Circles Dies (#151770) to create a layered circle to cover the top of the lid and I also added some texture with the Gingham Embossing Folder (#157627).

Global Design Project: GDP271 Theme Challenge

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my blog! With Christmas just around the corner, this week's challenge at Global Design Project is Winter/Holiday.

I try not to use thick embellishments on my cards because it makes it difficult to send them through the mail. I knew I would find just the right project to use this flower on, and this challenge is the perfect opportunity. A gift box is a great way to showcase this gorgeous flower without worrying whether it will be destroyed in the mail.

First, let's talk about the box. I made a basic box with the following dimensions. (Bottom: 8" square Basic Black cardstock scored on each side at 2". Top: 6" square of Plaid Tidings DSP (#153527) scored on each side at 1".) This black and white plaid paper gives the project a modern farmhouse feel that is really trendy right now. If you want something more traditional, the reverse side of this dsp is perfect for you. This paper collection has a great variety of colors and has something for just about every season. If you are new to box making or you need a refresher, here is a link to a really good box tutorial by Stampin' Up! Some of the products in the video are retired, but the idea is still the same.

Now let's talk about the flower. I made this poinsettia a few weeks ago while I was working on this tag. I like to make flowers in batches so I have them ready to go. I used Real Red cardstock and die cut two of each flower layer using the Poinsettia Dies (#153522) that are part of the Poinsettia Petals Bundle in the Holiday Mini Catalog. Each petal has Early Espresso ink sponged on the edges with a dauber. I honestly wasn't sure if I liked it at first, but once I added the Shimmery White Embossing Paste (#145645), I knew it was a good choice. In addition, all of the greenery is cut with the same die set.

These gorgeous bells are just the perfect finishing touch. They are cut from Silver Foil Cardstock using the Sounds of the Season Dies (#154043). Everything on this project is timeless and is destined for my permanent craft collection.

Global Design Project: GDP269 Color Challenge

This week at the Global Design Project blog we have a color challenge that is perfect for Christmas. You really can't get more traditional than this.

I am fascinated with the look of mixed media but it isn't something I would want to make every day. I follow a few different mixed media artists on youTube, and for the most part, they use products that are pre-made to create their projects. That is great, but I really don't want to purchase a completely different set of items that I may never use, so, for my project, I used the Stampin' Up! products that I already had on hand.

The other thing about mixed media is that it tends to be very 3-dimensional, so using it for cards can create a whole different set of problems. But mixed media on tags and boxes are an entirely different thing. To make my tag for this color challenge I primarily used the products from the Poinsettia Petals Bundle (#144148) along with a few other things.

There is no denying that the focal point of this project is the flowers and they were definitely the most time-consuming, so let's begin there. I die cut several different sizes of flowers and holly leaves from watercolor paper. I sponged Real Red ink on the flower centers and Garden Green and Just Jade ink on the leaves. I put a piece of scrap paper on top of a Stampin' Pierce Mat (#126199) and placed the colored side of the flowers face down. I misted the back of the flowers (and leaves) with water and let it soak in for about a minute. Then I used the rounded cap on the Take Your Pick Tool (#144107) to shape the petals. Next, I turned the flowers over and pushed down the centers. After the flowers were completely dry I assembled them using hot glue.  I used the clear/gold Wonderful Gems (#153536) as flower centers and then used my fingers to rub Shimmery White Embossing Paste (#145645) all over the flowers and leaves. This is really messy but definitely worth the extra step. After I thoroughly washed my hands, I set everything aside to dry while I finished the rest of the tag.

 

For the tag I used a 3" x 5.5" piece of Real Red cardstock and snipped off the top corners at an angle. I used Real Red ink to stamp the poinsettia and holly leaf all over the background. Next, I sponged both colors of green ink onto the white side of a wreath from the Forever Gold Laser-Cut Specialty Paper (#152493) and attached it to the center of the tag. I added a piece of Metallic Mesh Ribbon (#153550) and then used hot glue to add the flowers to the tag. I die cut some sprigs from white glitter paper (retired) and tucked them in behind the flowers. Finally, I used the Joy Dies (#153530) to cut the sentiment using white glitter paper for the word and Just Jade cardstock for the background layer.

Global Design Project: GDP259 Theme Challenge

The theme for this week's challenge at Global Design Project is School Days.

What could be more appropriate for this theme than a cinnamon candy apple for the teacher!

OK...so it's not a real candy apple, but it is super adorable, right! I love creating little gifts like this to give away. The trick is to make it cute, fast, and easy to produce in bulk! Here are the supplies you will need:

• 152704    Sunflowers Dies (or similar leaf die) and a die-cutting machine
• 152475    Forever Greenery Trim Combo Pack
• 104199    Linen Thread
• 101650    Very Vanilla Cardstock
• 149229    Bloom & Grow Stamp Set (or similar greeting stamp)
• 141491    Classic Label Punch
• 147114    Early Espresso Classic Stampin' Pad
• Basic paper crafting supplies (paper trimmer, bone folder, scissors, adhesive, sponge daubers)

Fill boxes with Cinnamon Red Hearts candy. These boxes by Stampin' Up! are food-safe!

Cut Real Red Cardstock into 2" x 8.5" strips. You can get five strips per sheet of 8.5" x 11" cardstock.

Score each strip every 2" plus a smidge. If you wrap the boxes too tightly, you won't be able to remove the sleeve later. Place adhesive on the small tab and form an open box.

Cut three squares of Real Red DSP for each box. (I used the dot and woodgrain patterns.) Also, die-cut two leaves per box from Garden Green DSP. Sponge the edges of the box, squares, and leaves with Early Espresso Ink. This step is optional but it makes a big impact on the finished design.

Adhere red paper squares to the top and sides of the box. Adhere leaves with glue dots to the center of the box top.

Cut and wrap approximately 16" of ribbon around the box and tie into a knot.  Cut three pieces of Linen Thread (approximately 18" each), slip it under the knot, and tie a bow.

Stamp the greeting on Very Vanilla card stock and punch out with Classic Label Punch. Trim the excess off the left end. Lightly sponge ink around edges and adhere to the box underneath the bow/knot.

Global Design Project: GDP219 Theme Challenge

The theme for this week's challenge at Global Design Project is O Christmas Tree.

For our challenge I made vintage-style Christmas tree-shaped ornaments.

I went to the vintage market this weekend here in Nashville, and I was inspired by all the beautiful vintage Christmas decor. To create my own vintage-style ornaments I used the Toile Tidings Suite along with a few other items.

I salvaged a piece of chipboard from the packaging of a Paper Pumpkin kit. The board was 6"x9" so I was able to get three triangles from it. I covered the front and back of each piece with Toile Tidings DSP and heavily distressed the edges with Early Espresso ink.

I die cut several snowflakes using the Seasonal Layers dies and added some Ice Stampin' Glitter. I just love this stuff!

FI used our Jingle Bells (#149598) and used a Dark Soft Suede Stampin' Blends Marker to tone them down. And, of course, I added lots of Linen Thread to each ornament. I just love how these turned out, although it is difficult to capture the true beauty of the glittered snowflakes.

Global Design Project: GDP203 Theme Challenge

The theme for this week's challenge at Global Design Project is Sun, Moon, and Stars.

Life has been a little crazy over the past two weeks. My husband lost his father somewhat unexpectedly due to an unfortunate accident. Sadly, you aren't always prepared for lifes little tragedies. I didn't have much time to stamp this week, so my entry into this week's challenge is fairly simple. I am also running behind...but better late than never!

We have some sneak peeks from the upcoming Holiday Catalog happing here. For my project I used the Brightly Gleaming Specialty DSP with it's gorgeous copper foiled accents on one side of each sheet. I also used the Tiny Keepsakes Dies for the box and tag. It just doesn't get any easier than this.

Catching Up with Country Lane Suite

My high school reunion was this past weekend and I don't have my usual Global Design Project for you today. However, I recently have shared several projects made with the Country Lane stamp set and Tin Tile 3D embossing folder. I made this 3D project last October for one of the ADT blog hops, but I ended up using a different project and never got around to sharing this one.

If you search for "tin tile" on Pinterest, you will find several projects made with antique tin tiles. It is a very popular trend here in the United States. I was inspired by several different projects to create this pouch. I used a 6"x 9" piece of Whisper White cardstock for my project, embossed the entire strip, and folded in the sides. Then I just added adhesive to the seam and the bottom to create a pouch with the look of a real tin tile pouch. The finished size is approximately 4-3/8"x 6". There is quite a bit of distressing going on here along with some ink splatters - all using Early Espresso ink.

To create the coordinating tissue paper, I filled a spritzer with rubbing alcohol and some Blackberry Bliss ink refill. It is helpful to go outside for this step or at least use a box to prevent any over-spray from getting on everything.

Fancy Friday Blog Hop - Designer Series Paper Love

Thank you for joining us for our monthly Fancy Friday Blog Hop. The Fancy Friday team consists of some of the most talented Stampin' Up! demonstrators around...all past or current Artisans. If you are hopping with us, you should have just arrived from visiting the talented, Rochelle Blok.  Isn't she amazing!

Our theme this month is "Designer Series Paper Love". I love to use Stampin' Up! Designer Series Paper on my paper crafting projects and I am head-over-heels in love with the Magnolia Lane DSP. This one particular sheet of DSP can be used with the coordinating die so it makes this project super easy to make.

As much as I love making cards, I love making 3-dimensional projects even more. This home decor was easy to make. I started with a gold square photo frame that I purchased from a thrift store for only .99 cents. You can't beat that! I painted it with white acrylic paint and added just a hint of Crumb Cake ink refill to tone it down just a bit.

That beautiful bow is made using the Magnolia Lane Ribbon Combo Pack (#149485) along with some twine from a piece of Flax Ribbon (#148764).
