Global Design Project: GDP294 Sketch Challenge

It's time for our sketch challenge at Global Design Project.

I really struggled with this one until I stopped taking it literally and went with something a little more abstract. When I looked at the original design I knew it was not really my style...so I decided to make it work for me. Instead of those diagonal panels, I used two die-cut springs of greenery...and that made all the difference.

I guess I should back up a bit and start with things in order of layers. I used a Bermuda Bay card base and added a piece of white cardstock that I ran through the embossing machine using the new Stitched Greenery Die (#155451). Next, I die-cut two springs using Mossy Meadow cardstock and the new Artistic Dies (#155371) being extra careful to leave all those intricate pieces intact. At this point, I knew it was missing something, so I added some flowers that I already had premade from an earlier project using the Pierced Blooms Dies.

I stamped the "thanks" from the Artistically Inked stamp set (#154542) in Mossy Meadow ink and used my electronic cutter to cut it. Finally, I added a few sequins from the Expressions in Ink Ephemera Pack (#155465).

Global Design Project: GDP293 Color Challenge

This week's challenge at Global Design Project uses some of our beautiful new In-Colors for 2021-2023.

I used an Evening Evergreen Ombre Gift Bag (#155479) backed with an adhesive sheet to create an easy and beautiful background for this card. The flowers/leaves are from the Timeless Tropical stamp set (#151497) and stamped in Pale Papaya/Evening Evergreen inks. I used Pale Papaya Stampin' Blends to color the flowers and Soft Succulent Blends for the leaves.

 

I added a white floral spray die cut with the Penned Flowers dies (#155557). The word "aloha" is from the In The Tropics die set (#151495) and is designed to coordinate with the Timeless Tropical stamp set (#151497). I cut it once with Evening Evergreen cardstock and twice with Whisper White cardstock and then layered them together to create a more substantial embellishment.

 

A few Genial Gems (#155500) add the perfect finishing touch to the card.

Global Design Project: GDP292 CASE Challenge

This week at Global Design Project, we are CASEing this lovely card by my talented friend, Susan Wong. Susan's card is so pretty, and you know how much I love flowers, so finding inspiration was a breeze.

There really isn't much stamping on my card. I used the same sentiment that Susan used from the Hydrangea Haven Stamp Set (#158210) stamped in Bermuda Bay ink.  The main focus of this card is the flowers. I used the Pierced Blooms Dies (#154312) to create a bunch of flowers. Then I spent around an hour assembling different color combinations. You can fit all the flowers from this die set onto a 5.5"x4.25" piece of cardstock, so I cut each flower once from these colors (So Saffron/Calypso Coral, Flirty Flamingo/Daffodil Delight, and Pool Party/Bermuda Bay). I then cut several sets of leaves from Granny Apple Green and Old Olive cardstock.

I love that Susan used twine on her card because that is exactly what I would have done. Also, the die I used for the tag (Stitched Rectangles #151820) was a bit too short, so I used the partial die-cutting technique to cut part of the tag, moved the die, and then cut the rest of the tag.

The stripes on this DSP are the perfect partner to all those amazing flowers. It is from the Pattern Party 12"x12" DSP (Host Reward #155426). I love how it picks up all the different colors and coordinates perfectly.

But wait, there's more. Look at what you get if you flip this beautiful paper over to the other side...

I absolutely love how the bright flowers pop on the black background. This is the exact same card (with a few tweaks of course) but it has a completely different look. I chose the first card as my CASE because of the soft pastel colors, but honestly, I love them both.

Global Design Project: GDP290 Sketch Challenge

We have another great sketch challenge at Global Design Project this week. Our designers have really done a great job with this one, so be sure to head over to the blog to see their amazing creations. You can also see them on Instagram.

If these cards look familiar, it is probably because they are an extension of the ones I made last week. I couldn’t get enough of last week’s color challenge of Coastal Cabana, Magenta Madness, and Bumble Bee, so I paired it with this week’s sketch to create two additional cards. This color combo is stunning, especially when used with the new Hand-Penned Petals Bundle from the upcoming 2021-2022 Annual Catalog (available May 4, 2021).

The big difference with these cards (other than the layout) is that I did not incorporate any DSP into the design. I love it when I am able to make cards using just stamps/dies, ink, and cardstock. I also realize that not everyone has access to the new host DSP, so this is a great way to use this stamp set with fewer supplies. And while Bumble Bee is one of my favorite colors, others may appreciate a different take on this color combo that downplays it.

I have to admit that I am hardpressed to pick a favorite of the lot, but I think it has to be this card. There is definitely a lot going on here. I wrestled with whether it is too busy, but in the end, I love it. I really like the colorful background on white, but it was lacking something...so I stamped some dots to fill in the gaps between images.  There is a great dot stamp in the Dressed to Impress set along with this great "hello" sentiment. I also hand-drew some of the dots in places where it was a little tricky.

I used Dimensional adhesive to give the circle some lift. This gives some separation from the background and helps break up the flow. I tried several approaches to this card design, but in the end, I kept coming back to this one.

Here is one of the other cards I made with this sketch. It is essentially the same but different. I tried to stay completely true to the sketch with this one. And while the original sketch doesn't have a solid strip down the left side, I thought it was a nice way to bring balance to the layout, especially with the elongated sentiment.
