We have a new color challenge this week at the Global Design Project project blog. We are using three of the new Stampin' Up! 2020-2021 In Colors for this beautiful color pallet.
When I first saw this challenge, my heart sank a little. Not because of the colors themselves, but when I placed my pre-order last month, I was only able to purchase the new cardstock and 6"x6" Designer Series Paper...but no ink. So each time I thought of a card design it was..."I can do watercoloring...no, wait, I don't have any ink. OK then, I can color with markers...no, wait, I don't have any Stampin' Blends in these colors either." After much deliberation, I finally decided to do paper piecing...hooray, no ink needed except for black! This card is inspired by these cards I made many years ago with the now-retired Regarding Dahlias stamp set.
Of course, I definitely could have made typical sunflowers for my card, but I am always looking for a different approach. I wanted to see if I could create something that closely resembles a Gerber daisy using sunflower stamps. I am not even sure if the two flowers are related, but that really doesn't matter...I just wanted to make a pretty flower. I used the Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set (#152517) for this card.
To get this look I stamped the large sunflower two times on Hello Honey DSP and stamped the small sunflower three times. Then I fussy cut one of the large and one of the small flowers all the way around as is. Then on the other large and small flowers, I cut away some of the petals leaving only the ones in the foreground. Finally, I cut just the center of the third small sunflower. I used an Ivory Stampin' Blends marker to add shading to all the different layers and curled the petals. Then I used Stampin' Dimensionals to assemble the layers. For the leaves, I stamped on Just Jade DSP and fussy cut them. I added some shading to the centers with a Light Mint Macaron Stampin' Blends marker and then curled those petals as well.
The rest of the card is fairly basic. I die cut a piece of Magenta Madness DSP with the Stitched Rectangle Dies, attached it to some Heavyweight Whisper White Cardstock and stamped the greeting with the same Memento Jet Black ink that I used on the flowers. It was really helpful to use a Stamparatus on all of the pieces so that I could stamp each piece several times to achieve a more intense black.
I just love the new Celebrate Sunflowers stamp set, so don't be surprised if you see me using it often!
Be sure to check out what the other talented designers/players have created for this great color challenge at the Global Design Project Challenge Blog!
